Multi-touch Screen Technology HMI Tools Enable Improved Factory Production Monitoring
Wonderware and Kontron Improve Factory Efficiency through Standards-Based, Pre-Integrated Automation and Control Systems

The Kontron Panels met all of Wonderware’s hardware specs and performance requirements, including offering a range of screen sizes and chassis designs all based on the same underlying hardware platform. “This was especially important,” explains David Gardner, Product Manager at Wonderware, “because we can offer customers a variety of systems to fit their environment without changing our software or modifying the system in any way.” Wonderware also preferred Kontron’s Panel because they use the Ultra Low Voltage Intel® Pentium® M processor, which enables Wonderware and Kontron to deliver the bundle in a fanless design that can withstand the harsh conditions of most factory settings.

HMI for the Printing Industry - Printing Press

Replacement of PLCs and NC controls by IPC based controls
A customized HMI is integrated into the operating panel of a sheet fed offset printing press, which can do double-sided printing in a single pass. The printing machine is controlled via a TFT touchscreen on which settings and status data are displayed. Almost all the peripheral devices are controlled using the touchscreen via CANopen. The system, which is equipped with an onboard graphics solution, is shock and vibration resistant.

HMI Based Control of Radiography Systems

For a leading supplier of diagnostic imaging devices Kontron provides controlling and visualization units. Thanks to this modern digital technique it’s possible to examine patients in a more gentle way to provide faster more confident diagnoses. With this highly advanced all digital X-ray system a wide range of applications is possible – from vascular diagnostic procedures, vascular and non-vascular interventional procedures to routine RF examinations. The imaging information is forwarded as digital image data to the PC and thus can be made available to all users of the internal network in the hospital. The main criteria for choosing a Kontron HMI solution was their knowledge of the medical market and the compliance with the norms and regulations of this market, which even had to be partially exceeded.

Expandable and Flexible Train Management System with Remote I/O

For their new generation of rail cars, CFD has decided to equip their new trains with a fully electronic command control instead relays or industrial PLC. Electronic equipment include the TMS (Train Management System), the Human-Machine Interface and Remote I/O. The proposed solution is an open and flexible platform allowing for example the realisation of passenger information system tightly coupled with a local system according the geographical specialties of this specific region. Based on open standards like VME for the hardware and ISaGRAF (IEC61131-3 open to C language) for the software tools, the system offers to the OEM all the resources needed for the development of sequential (hvacs, lights…) or communication (intercabs, traction…) algorithms.

Intelligent Display Unit for CONTROL, MAINTENANCE and CCTV

Within the framework of a Transportation project, Kontron has developed an Intelligent Display Unit (IDU) for the surveillance of passenger doors on the train. The display is also used to show train diagnostics and configuration. This unit is based on an industrial PC architecture (Pentium M) working with standard operating systems like XP Embedded and Linux. The PC104/104+ extension bus also allows adding various railway-specific busses like MVB communication or video surveillance with image incrustation. The strong points of this system are low consumption, resistance to industrial temperature ranges from -25°C to +70°C, excellent shock and vibration resistance, and ability to work under 24V, 72V or 110V.

Train Management System

The AGC (Autorail Grande Capacité) from Bombardier is part of the latest generation of regional trains for local and long-distance travel. Kontron developed the hardware of the Train Management System (TMS), the Graphical User Interface (GUI) and the Remote I/Os of the AGC.
The conductor and maintenance personnel use the GUI to access the TMS in real time. The TMS acts as the central system of the train and is also a gateway in between several networks like WTB, MVB, LON, CAN, Ethernet and wireless connections offering remote connections. The goal is to have a fast and transparent data transfer of the train’s core functions and to manage the passenger oriented comfort systems. The Remote I/Os are developed by Kontron to offer an optimized economic solution for I/O’s decentralized management on a network like MVB-, or Ethernet.
The EN50155 standard for electronic railroad applications places heavy demands on the Kontron hardware. The standard assumes that electronic systems on trains will need to operate 24 hours a day for 30 years, or approximately 250,000 hours, without failure. This means that train management systems must be designed to withstand the toughest environmental conditions: extended temperature ranges (-40°C to +85°C), humidity, vibrations and power fluctuations. Even heat build-up and therefore energy absorption have to stay within narrow ranges: only passive cooling technologies are permitted.

TIS - Technological Information & Control System in
Project TIS represents industrial automation solution of integrated technological information & control system that is based on unified way of process data acquisition by means of the OPC technology and unified way of data storage into realtime PI database by OSIsoft. Three OPC Servers were developed in order to gather process data from special pharmaceutical production machines. Visualization, control, alarm and trends are done in client-server based SCADA HMI system Aspic MP. Operating staff can analyze the production process due to the automatically, manually or even-based generated reports in Microsoft Excel, where on-line and off-line data can be used and compared.

SCADA Controlled Painting Line in Automotive Industry
MASSIVE is a technological system for energy distributions systems, which integrates all dispatcher functions to a single monitoring environment, including a view of power distribution networks topology depending on "live" data from the surrounding environment. The operating staff is able to remotely control the power section switches within the whole power distribution network. SCADA HMI system Aspic 3.30 has been used as a main application for on-line and off-line visualization, remote control of connected stations, dynamic network zooming within one visualization page and colored distinguishing of pertinence to the supply transformer and of collision states. All gathered data and events are stored in ORACLE database for 5 years archiving period. What is more, MASSIVE system allows further simulation of non-communicating stations, network calculations or network parts searching in according to the specific criteria.

Extension of a subway train remote control system
At 4.02.2005 Kontron East Europe finished the biggest project in his history „Extension of a subway train remote control system” – it was the great success of the KEE team specially for the 10 years anniversary of the KEE. The work has been done in co-operation with Warsaw University of Technology - inventors of the remote control system. Beside commercial success it was also big technological step for train control systems in Poland, at station A18 has been installed an original Polish computer based on the interlocking system SIL‑4 with voting system 2 from 2 with cold reserve. For communication inside the remote control system Profibus L2 is used, locally for exchanging data Ethernet or RS is used when applicable. The whole communication system is based on fiber optic transmission.
Hardware used in the system, system contains several levels designed on different platforms:
Central Dispatching System in Filter Plant
To integrate the filter plant into the entire supervisory and control system was the second main customer inquiry. Operation of the filter plant system requires the ability to monitor and control the filter plant production, chemical feed processes like chlorination (for disinfection) and coagulation. Therefore, the SCADA HMI system Aspic MP has been extended by further Aspic MP I/O points; then the control system by further 10 SAIA PCDs and all components have been integrated into the entire system. Today, operators are able to monitor the complete filter plant, control remotely selected parts within the filter plant system, analyze the production data and generate specific reports for the whole filter plant production process.
